THE ROLE OF LANGUAGE IN DEFENCE, JUSTICE AND INTERNATIONAL SECURITY
I’ve got some very exciting news. And that is that our new
website for our Defence, Justice and International Security Division (DJIS)
went live today. So please go and have a look at the new site and it will help
you understand the excellent work that thebigword does in this field.
The DJIS over the last two years has built its experience of
providing well trained and well tested and highly security-cleared linguists
across the globe, by currently working operationally in Afghanistan and
classified locations in Europe, Asia and the Americas.

Our market is ever-changing with the development of
fantastic technology, which is changing our whole way of working; giving faster
and more accurate and secure services to global companies throughout the world,
who seem to have an ever increasing appetite to communicate with potential
customers in their own language. And it’s only going to grow.
I was very disappointed to learn that in the UK that there
was a major drop in students applying for modern language courses. This is for
a number of different reasons. First, our research shows that universities can
present other courses at a lower cost than language courses, for example, one
university told us that we can fill a lecture theatre of 500 people who are
studying event management at a lower cost than providing language training,
which needs much more interaction with lectures and tutors. I think you will
agree with me that this is really short-sighted but I suppose that this is
understandable in these economically challenging times. The language industry
has experienced extra pressure regarding prices but despite automation
including machine translation, the human linguist is the most important resource in the
translation and interpreting process. I’m confident that as the economy
improves – and it certainly seems to be improving – that the value of this
resources will certainly improve. Especially with a reduction in young people
studying languages for a career, so watch this space.
I really enjoy working in August. Mainly because the roads
are clear as school children take their holidays but my favourite time is the
beginning of September when much of the world returns to work.
Never before has thebigword had so many new projects. Our
insourcing and outsourcing department of linguists and project management staff
continue to increase, creating many more jobs for thebigword staff to work at
our clients premises, which gives us an opportunity to increase our
relationships with our clients.
I’m really looking forward to the weekend. For the first
time, in what feels like forever, we have no arrangements. So, I hope the rain
keeps off and I hope the sun shines on you.
Have a great week.
