THE SEARCH FOR A THOUSAND LINGUISTS

When you think about it, the celebration of a calendar year changes around the world, depending on location and time zone and religion. But within any given country, the end of the tax year is a unifying factor and a time when so many companies look at their performance over the past year and plan for the next.

That’s the position we’re in now at thebigword and it’s a really exciting time because it proves that even when the economy is slow, a company that offers great products backed by great service can succeed and grow.

As a result of all our hard work, we are expecting our year end turnover to reach $67 million which, over the past four years, means we have grown on average 31 per cent per year. This is an amazing achievement and also has a huge benefit for our staff because in the coming year, our employee numbers will increase to more than 500 and opportunities within the company will grow too.

Just as importantly, we are recruiting a thousand linguists to work with us to meet our clients’ needs and this will mean we will be working with 13,000 linguists in 72 different countries.

Much of our growth has come from providing the public sector in the UK and U.S. with interpreting services to enable them to communicate with increasingly multilingual populations. This is vital in order to police borders, help people find work and accommodation, and provide access to healthcare.

Our interpreting services, which are provided face to face and over the telephone, are backed by some of the most sophisticated software in the world and our recently announced Poppy Interpreter Booking System is the result of 18 months’ work and $1.6 million investment.

It’s all worthwhile when you meet our UK apprentices and U.S. interns who get their first chance of employment with thebigword and around a third of whom move from that into full-time jobs with the company.

Moving forwards, we have ambitious plans for the next five years which include both organic growth and acquisition.

I also have an important anniversary of my own coming up soon but I’m not worried about how old I am because I know I don’t look it. That’s what my PR lady says anyway! Whatever, it will be a great opportunity to celebrate and plan an exciting ‘New Year’ for me and thebigword.

Have a great weekend,

Larry
