HELPING TO HAND AFGHANISTAN BACK TO ITS PEOPLE
I’m delighted to tell you that at last, I can announce the great new Government contract that I’ve been hinting at for a while.
thebigword has been appointed to recruit, train and deploy interpreters to support the Ministry of Defence in Afghanistan.
This is a very important and sensitive role, since our interpreters will be helping in the process that will see combat troops withdraw from Afghanistan and hand power back to the Afghan people.
To do this, they will be accompanying British patrols as well as working on military bases. They will be liaising between troops and the indigenous population, the Afghan National Army and Afghan National Police. They will also be providing both interpreting (spoken word) and translation (written word) between English and three languages: Pashto, Dari and Baluchi.
Needless to say, recruiting the right people for this job has been no easy task. As well as being incredibly skilled at languages (since a war zone is definitely not a place where you want to misinterpret something), they also need to be physically fit and have the temperament to deal with all the pressures of work in a challenging climate. As a result, we’ve assessed hundreds of people to get our first 10, who go to Afghanistan this month.
It’s worth remembering that, whether we’re talking about trade, leisure travel or international diplomacy, none of it would work without these amazing people who can communicate across multiple languages.
