Investing in People for a Language Revolution

It’s been a busy week since thebigword’s annual conference and I’m pleased to say that it has really fired everyone up about the year ahead. We began by summarising our achievements so far, including our unprecedented 40% year-on-year growth, the US office enjoying record-breaking turnover, and the fact that we now have 430 staff in 8 global offices. However, my personal highlight was watching what people from across the company had to say about thebigword - to see the video please click on the link below.

Although I am extremely proud of the rapid progress we have made, thebigword is not a company fixated on the past. It’s time to focus on our targets for the future - and I’m not talking about taking baby steps – the language revolution is here!
The revolution is about breaking down the last barrier to communication between people of all nationalities: language. This means incorporating space-age technology into real-time services that are instantly accessible to the man on the street, government organisations and private companies.

What makes this ambitious target absolutely achievable is the close-knit and supportive family culture at thebigword. Our belief in the wonderful people working throughout our offices is reflected by the ‘Investors in People’ standard that we have continually held since 1992 and are looking forward to retaining at our upcoming 7th review.
Investors in People is a UK standard, aimed at improving business performance through effective people management. The audit is carried out through interviewing a cross section of colleagues from across the Leeds and London offices and I’m sure our ongoing commitment to these areas will shine.

In case you’d forgotten, it was thebigword’s 31st annual awards ceremony last Saturday and I think you’ll agree when I say, what a fabulous night! It was amazing how people travelled thousands of miles from our global offices to acknowledge the hard work of colleagues that they talk to every day but may never have met in person. The fact that the nominees were decided by carefully considered recommendations from more than 180 colleagues means that this really was our colleagues’ night, and its success was down to all of them.

I am thinking about making a small change next year and introducing an award for the most energetic, uninhibited dancing, something along the lines of: ‘Dance that you will most regret when you see the video evidence on Monday morning’ – to see this year’s winner, just follow the link below.. just joking, I’m not that mean!

Have a great weekend,
Larry
