JAPANESE EARTHQUAKE AND TSUNAMI.

On March 11th I, along with the rest of the Western world, woke to the horror of the 8.6 magnitude earthquake hitting Japan. As the day went on the true scale of the disaster was revealed through shocking pictures and amateur footage; we could only watch as a twenty-foot tsunami swept across entire towns, tossing houses and cars like playing cards; claiming thousands of lives and leaving many more in tatters.

thebigword has also been shaken by the event, with an office in Tokyo and substantial business in the affected area. I visited one of our customers in the Fukushima region only last year making it seem even more real.

Thankfully, our Tokyo team based in Shinjuku Park Tower was physically unscathed, but many staff were too scared to go home that night and chose instead to sleep in the building.

On the other side of the world at our Leeds-based headquarters we have set up a dedicated room to allow our Japanese staff members to communicate with their relatives through Skype.

I am currently working in New York and received a call in the middle of the night from our Tokyo office voicing concerns over the recent radiation leaks. Some of our staff have already moved to Kyoto, and we are now offering people the option of relocating to our Beijing or UK offices.

I will keep you all informed of any developments which may affect people at thebigword, and in the meantime know that our thoughts and prayers are with all of those affected by this terrible disaster.
