THE WORLD COMES TO YORKSHIRE AND FOR THEBIGWORD, IT ALWAYS HAS!

It’s really amazing to hear news from our office in Leeds, UK about the exciting build-up to the Tour de France, being held this weekend in Yorkshire for the first time in its 111-year history. thebigword is a corporate hospitality partner for the event and our Chief Commercial Officer, Josh Gould, will be right there at the start alongside Royalty – Prince William and his wife Kate, and Prince Harry are attending – celebrities and sporting stars, and not forgetting the Tour cyclists themselves.

Josh speaking at the Civic Reception, Leeds Art Gallery for the beginning of the Tour de France.

There are flags all along the route of the two Yorkshire stages, stretching hundreds of miles, and people are coming out in their millions to welcome the Tour and visitors from all over the world.

At thebigword, it’s wonderful to see this outpouring of excitement as the world comes to Yorkshire.  For us, it’s also a reminder that we’ve been doing that for more than three decades! People of 73 nationalities work at our Leeds office, which is the global hub for an operation that runs 24/7 servicing the interpreting and translation needs of governments and corporations right around the world.

At our own office our staff are dressing up in cycling gear and Tour colours and, cheered on by their colleagues, competing in time trials on exercise bikes supplied by the local Armley Gym.  The Big Dash competition will see who can clock up the most distance in the allotted time and who records the fastest kilometre.  I’ll report on medal and prize-winners next week.

As part of our Tour de France activities, thebigword has also created ‘The Big Start’ - a website and booklet designed to help businesses think about whether their literature, signage, marketing materials and services will be clear and easy for international visitors to understand.

Alongside The Big Start, we at thebigword has had our own big start to our new financial year.  June 2014 is the best-ever month in the company’s 32-year financial history, which is a wonderful achievement.  Success like that is, like the Tour de France, a team effort so thank you to all the staff in our 13 global offices for every single contribution you’ve made to getting our new year off to such a great start.

So welcome to the Tour de Yorkshire!  Have a great weekend.  I’ll be peddling every mile of the way from my nice comfy armchair with a nice glass of French wine in my hand.

Enjoy.

Larry
