THEBIGWORD IN THE NEWS AROUND THE WORLD
“It's been a very exciting week
with plenty of good news about thebigword across the media, from Leeds to
Libya.
One of the items refers to the
contract we
have won with the MOD which we at thebigword are
extremely proud of as this was a very heavily contested contract.
We’re also delighted to be commended
on the work we are doing with our apprentices by the British Shadow Secretary
of State for Workers and Pensions, Rachel Reeves, who
recently visited our headquarters. The training
of young people is just one part of thebigword’s Learning and Development program
for this coming year. Ahead of the launch of new technology over the next
six months we have created training courses in partnership with the International School of Linguists (ISL)
which will be available to our community of 12,000 linguists who are registered
with thebigword by the end of September.
We have also increased the amount
of training time given to our staff by more than 500%. There’ll be more
about that in the weeks ahead and we’re very proud of the support we’re giving
ISL who will assist us in ensuring that both our operations and linguists are
able to take full advantage of the technological developments.
In the next few weeks you’ll be
hearing more details about our On Demand Translation Service. This means
that we’re able to act at great speed and accuracy not for just large contracts
but for smaller pieces of work as well, that play a vital part in our
customers’ ability to win business and react quickly to their clients’ needs.
High on our list of priorities is
to ensure that we can interconnect the world of machine translation with our
linguists and thebigword’s Learning and Development department has worked with
ISL to create technology-enabled translation courses which will be released
over the next couple of months.
The appetite for translation and
interpreting is growing so rapidly. We’ve talked in the past about how
language is the final barrier to trade and education and plays a vital role in
negotiations between countries. Through thebigword’s Interpreting
Management System (IMS), Translation Management System (TMS) and working
together with our linguists and our machine translation capability, we believe
that thebigword will be the world leader in the Translation and Interpreting
market.
Who would have thought 10 years
ago that we could talk to people in other countries almost immediately for a
small amount of money. Telecommunications as we know it now has created
an amazing revolution and of course, the internet has revolutionised our
ability to reach out globally to our customers and potential customers.
As amazing as these communication systems are, without being able to speak the
language of the person you are trying to communicate with, it really does not
reach its potential.
thebigword continues to have huge
admiration for organisations embracing this technology and frankly we’re
extremely shocked at how many organisations have not yet caught on, but they
will. But if they don’t, they just won’t be able to compete in the markets in
the future.
We believe that thebigword spends
the highest percentage of its profits on the development of technology than any
of its competitors and we’re very excited by some of the
wins that we are making now because of what we will be able to offer our clients.
I’m nervous as I write this blog
as I know my Commercial and Technology department will be censoring this as
they don’t want me to give away too much at this point so I’ll stop there
before I get carried away so watch this space…
I arrived back in New
York last Friday and shall be here for the next few weeks so I’ll update you on the
progress of our American team next week so ‘have a great one’, as they say
here.”
