Larry’s Blog 31 July

Well it’s been quite a week at thebigword; work seems to be on the increase and we have every chance of July being the best month in the history of the company. And that’s some record as we approach our 30th year! What is more encouraging is the ever-increasing amount of requests for us to tender and we are winning more work every day.

In contrast to the good news at thebigword over recent times, one cannot help but be affected by the very tragic loss of life and increased injury of soldiers in Afghanistan. This was brought home to me when I watched the T.V. programme ‘The Street’ this week which featured an injured soldier returning home from Afghanistan and the problems he faced after suffering terrible injuries in fitting back into society. It really hit home to me when one of our own Project Managers, who had joined the T.A, was called up and sent off to Afghanistan as a Medic working in the firing line. If you knew Oliver you couldn’t imagine him choosing to be in such a dangerous position. He is very mild mannered and brilliant with the clients and we really missed him when he went off to war.

Fortunately, Oliver returned safely to thebigword. We organised a hero’s return. Seeing him standing in the main office receiving his welcome home gift in his modest and appreciative manner brought it home to us that what is happening out there and that it is not just some T.V footage with actors playing a part. When you actually know someone who has been in such danger it becomes very real. What was more humbling was how appreciative he was-- I don’t think there was a dry eye in the house as he accepted our gift. Even I was lost for words.

I am very proud of our Corporate Responsibility Group, made up with representatives from different departments around the company. The group felt quite passionately that supporting our soldiers was something important to do. And because of that we started a campaign to donate and raise money for soldiers who have been injured in the war. The other charities we support include Water Aid and a number of local charities but what makes me most proud is that it is not just the company making the donations but many of our staff give and raise money by undertaking various activities. They are now embarking on a campaign to volunteer their own time in our communities helping those less fortunate than ourselves.

So, once again, thank you all within the company and those of you outside thebigword who have supported these needy and worthwhile causes.
