Award Winners!

What a fantastic week. All my efforts in practicing my losing smile were a total waste of time. This week at the Yorkshire Post Awards ceremony in Leeds, UK, not only were we short listed as one of the best companies to work for, but we won the coveted Business in Excellence Award in the category of companies with a turnover between £10 and £50m ($82m US).

So thanks to our great team of people, both our internal staff and the tremendous efforts made by our community of translators and interpreters, working for us from more than 73 countries throughout the world.

Over the past year our turnover has consistently increased and we have added to our client base a staggering 1,000+ companies. My thanks go to the tremendous efforts made in sales and marketing. 40 members of our team spend much of their lives in cars, airplanes and hotels, fighting for business in a difficult market. It is through much of their efforts that we have had the opportunity to expand so quickly.

At the same time, our world class operations team is winning more business within the companies we are servicing. So when I say we have opened 1,000+ new accounts, this is not totally true. It means 1,000 additional new companies are using thebigword, but within those companies, we are receiving many recommendations about our project management, leading to additional departments using our services.

Can we sustain the growth? I think this is an important question. We can, as long as we continue to focus on technology to aid our service, and I think that is our big differentiator, but our technology is not just stand-alone software. Behind it are real people, there to help our customers deal with their language management issues. You can have the best technology and the best project managers, but in the end it is down to the translators and interpreters to deliver.

Over the next months we will explore better how we can all work with each other. I have been delighted at the huge number of emails that my blog has generated from linguists. Not all of them are 100% complimentary and I am constantly being asked, what else can thebigword do for us? My reply to this is, we can do more. In January we will be launching “We Love Our Linguists” campaign. However, this love is not unconditional. As I have explained earlier, many of our team spend their lives away from home, travelling and working long hours under a great deal of stress. We need to have an understanding of how our partnership can work in the best way together.

Some of the comments have been affected by ‘whine flu’. If you have made mistakes in translations and we have removed you from our register, then you have to understand that this is a business decision. The one way we can be affected in our growth is to provide low quality translations, and that is something we are not going to tolerate.

Over the next few weeks I will be inviting various people to be guests on my blog from different areas of our business and also from the translator community. So if anyone wants to be part of this, please let me know.

Looking forward to catching up with you next week.

Wishing you all a great weekend.
