THE NAME'S GOULD, DR GOULD.

I arrived back in Manchester at 8 o’clock this morning after flying through the night from Newark Airport, New York. Despite feeling horribly jet-lagged and being at serious risk of falling asleep with a cup of coffee in my hand while I type this, I wanted to update you on a few things first before getting some much-needed sleep.

I came home to a pile of regional press coverage and congratulations cards regarding Leeds Metropolitan University’s decision to bestow an Honorary Doctorate in Business Administration upon me. My reaction to this unexpected news is mixed. On the one hand I am absolutely delighted that I was even considered, and, on the other, I’m terrified after being told I have to make a speech to more than 2000 graduates (I’ll let you know how it goes another time...).

What can I tell a bunch of eager graduates when I dropped out of school at 15?

I used to think that graduates might just be missing out on a few years of work experience – but the talented graduates that work at thebigword, some of whom are from Leeds Met, are testament to their vital role in helping people develop their skills.

University teaches you to ask questions, analyze the world around you and gain a range of transferable as well as specific skills that can be applied in the working world (and of course, graduates on average, get paid more). It also gives you valuable formative life experience and helps you establish the precise point at which one more drink turns a great night into a big mistake.

thebigword is a company that attracts talented people from all backgrounds and helps them to develop these talents and build a great career; that is why we employ a lot of graduates and place so much emphasis on our apprenticeship and work experience schemes.

Whether you went to university or not, it doesn’t matter how smart you are; how creative you are; or how skilled you are - if you don’t have self-belief you’re limiting your success before you’ve even started.

thebigword has an open-door policy in place to facilitate the sharing of ideas and give everybody the opportunity to achieve their full potential. Be enthusiastic, make suggestions and let your personality shine. Above all, don’t let a lack of self-belief hold you back.

If you think that you have what it takes to work for thebigword then go to http://www.thebigword.com/ for a list of our current vacancies!

Have a great weekend,

Larry
