Remembering the past and looking to the future

Emotionally it has been a really up and down week. My mother, who has suffered from MS for the past 50 years and now unfortunately has dementia, was rushed into hospital on Tuesday and we were advised that she was not expected to survive the day. So for the next couple of days the family were at her bedside.

To our utter amazement, by Wednesday evening she had opened her eyes and despite the fact she had not really spoken much over the past few months, in a reasonably clear voice she told us she had “decided to stick around a little longer”. Yesterday she returned to the nursing home, much to the amazement of everyone.

My mother, despite all her challenges, has always shown such a great positive attitude to life and is so strong in spirit. It is at this time, maybe because my mother was born in America, that one reflects on 9/11 and the spirit of the Americans. I can only speak from my experience of the people who work for us in our New York and San Francisco offices, and our US customers, both commercial and Government, how amazing their spirit has been in rebuilding the positive attitude with great optimism and fortitude.

Our head office in the US is based in Wall Street. This area has not only been attacked by bombs but also been ravaged by the economic banking crisis. If you sit in the coffee shops, and, as you all know, I love to eavesdrop on people’s conversations, they are nearly all about improving the situation, doing deals and making it better. The absolute energy coming from our team in the US is sensational.

So wishing both the US and my mother good health and continued recovery. Looking forward to catching up with you next Friday, and especially looking forward to my trip to the US on Sunday.

Have a good one!
